Question techniques
When devising questions, you will need to gauge the language and level to suit your learnersâ ability and age range. The type of question is also crucial as to the amount of information you need to obtain, as is the type of response you expect. Using a closed question, i.e. a question only requiring a yes or no response, will not give you as much information as an open question, which enables learners to give a detailed answer.
Open questions begin with who, what, when, where, why and how (WWWWWH) and they will help ensure you gain good quality answers. If you would rather use closed questions with yes or no responses, you could ask a further question to enable the learner to elaborate on why they answered yes or no.
Below are some yes or no sample statements which you could ask your learners in a questionnaire. Alternatively, you could you use smiley faces, such as: for learners to circle. If you would like further feedback, you could include a comment stating âplease explain your answerâ.
